Focus Area:

Detection and Identification

Project Cost:

$1,365K

Project Duration:

40 months

Performer:

Smiths Detection, Torion

Deliverable:

Three (3) Prototype systems

End User:

Department of Defense, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Department of Homeland Security, and First Responders.

Description:

Develop a person portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system for detection, identification, and quantification of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. The device will accurately identify selected threat agents and TICs present in air, water, soil and other matrices.

Operational Impact:

GC-MS has long been a gold standard for analysis of unknowns, but field-portable GC-MS instruments have lacked in detection capability and ease of operation for technician level users. Smiths Detection and Torion Technologies have developed a person portable GC-MS with 20 % reduced size over currently fielded systems, lower power consumption, and extended battery life. The total analysis time is less than 4 minutes for qualitative screening and 10 minutes for quantitative analysis.

Transition:

Product is certified to NFPA 1994 Class 3 and is commercially available from Lion Apparel
