EOD Expeditionary Exploitation Unit One (EXU-1)
U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (USACID) - Forensic Exploitation Department
Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) (United Kingdom)

Description:

The Portable Raman Microscope can detect single particles of explosives, pharmaceutical based agents, and other chemical residues as small as 5 microns with limited logistical burden. Lightweight and ruggedized for conducting analysis in mobile operations, the system can automatically locate and identify residue within a 1 square inch area on a diverse range of surfaces, including curved and metallic such as an aluminum can, using their unique spectrographic chemical signatures.

Operational Impact:

Technologies for conducting field forward explosive/chemical analysis have been limited to large laboratory instruments that require experts to operate them. Development of this capability will enable warfighters, and forensic investigators, to identify and respond to both explosive and chemical threats with minimal effort and logistical burden at field forward operating locations.

Transition:

The performer intends implement a USG-approved commercialization strategy to make the system available directly through their company, the GSA Catalog, and DLA Troop Support.
