NFPA 1994 Class 1 Certified Ensembles

End User:

USMC

Description:

This project developed a non-encapsulating protective ensemble for high-level threat protection that uses a tactical, low-profile design to afford greater freedom of movement. The ensemble was certified to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1990 Standard for Protective Ensembles for Hazardous Materials and CBRN Operations and was validated beyond the rigorous certification testing against conditions specified by participating end users (e.g., functionality in harsh weather and exposure to additional hazards of interest).

Operational Impact:

Previously, operating in high-risk CBRN environments required cumbersome “bubble suits” that degraded force performance and introduced other hazards due to reduced maneuverability and heat stress. This effort enabled a more agile, resilient, and effective force by providing operators greater freedom of movement during a CBR incident.

Transition:

The certified ensemble is commercially available from Blauer.
